Thursdays are usually good days at work, and this past Thursday was no different. I was getting everything done that I needed to get done. I was exceeding expectations.
All was good.
I decided to try making it better by getting on DoorDash and purchasing the new Crispy Chicken Sandwich by KFC. Hell, I thought, I just got paid. Let’s spend a little!
And spend a little, I did. The KFC combo comes out to 7.49, which is a pretty decent price point when you consider the rest of the field.
I got it delivered to my door, so I clocked out, grabbed my food, and commenced eating.
The bun was there. It was soft and didn’t fall apart. Held the sandwich together well. It tasted fresh and fine. That’s about all you can ask for, really.
For the second sandwich in a row, the pickles didn’t add the flavorful punch I was hoping for. They’re great on the CFA sandwich. They’re great on the Popeyes Sandwich. Hell, they’re even good on the Culver’s sandwich.
I don’t know what the Colonel and Ronald McDonald are doing, but something’s missing with their pickles in how they mesh with the rest of the sandwich.
Speaking of the Colonel, the sauce works here. It’s not great, and there’s definitely not enough kick here to consider it a spicy sandwich. But, all in all, this is a pretty good sauce for the bird it’s on, and frankly, that’s a really great start.
Now, to the bird.
The quality of the bird is good just like with most KFC meals. That is hardly ever the problem any time you go visit the Colonel.
The problem is them not ever wanting to stray from the original recipe to make something different. It’s almost like Yum! Brands is afraid of disturbing the ghost of Colonel Sanders because this bird was not spicy.
The sauce is the only thing that makes this sandwich even have any remote kick to it. The bird was almost certainly original recipe, and some people might really get down with that.
I don’t. You can’t call something spicy if it’s no different from the original. False advertising.
One positive I have to say about the bird was that it is a sizable chunk of fried meat. This is a Popeyes-sized sandwich. It’s probably the second-biggest on the market.
Overall, this is definitely a good outing by Kentucky Fried Chicken, but much like McDonald’s, there’s room to improve here. They need to bump up their pickle quality and pick out some different spices.
This falls somewhere between Culver’s and Cane’s on the tierlist. Directly in the middle. It’s the true neutral of fried chicken sandwiches, but I recommend trying it.
