Before I even get started, let me clarify something: I am a pansexual person, and I eat Chick-fil-A. I know they don’t have a great history in my community, but if we don’t consume at places that don’t have a great history, then we would be growing and raising our own food.
Now on to the review.
Late last Saturday night, my lady and I filtered through the endless amounts of restaurants on Doordash, trying to find a place to eat that we could both agree on.
After finding a few places that closed on my Apple device, we came across Chick-fil-A, and we knew it was the 11th hour for getting CFA that week.
We hopped into the car and drove a mile or so to the Chick, and I ordered my usual: a spicy deluxe chicken sandwich combo with polynesian, chick-fil-a, and buffalo sauce on the side.
Yes, I have had this sandwich before, but it’s very good.
The bun is nice; that’s all there really is to say. If I have nothing to say about the bun, that’s good. The lettuce and tomato add a different element to me than other chicken sandwiches. They give you just the tiniest tease that you’re eating something slightly healthier than the competition.
Call it a placebo.
The pickles help bring out the flavor in the chicken patty, and the pepper jack cheese has a similar effect. The cheese brings out the spice, and the pickles accentuate the pickle juice that they dip the patty in.
Let’s get to the star of the show.
The chicken patty consists of great quality meat. The bird here is immaculate. They never get it wrong. It’s never dry. It’s never rubbery. It’s perfect every time. Phenomenal bird here.
The seasoning used is just as good, but it’s not too spicy. I wouldn’t call this an accessible sandwich for someone who is spice averse (which I’m not), but I don’t think it’ll give a mayo-eating white person instant acid reflux as soon as they take one bite.
As far as the bird goes, I only hold one complaint against it. The patty is crispy on the edges of the sandwich, but as you get towards the center, the crispiness disappears for whatever reason. What’s up with that? That should change.
Let’s talk about the price.
If you’re just getting the sandwich, it’s about five dollars, and all things considered, that’s a decent price point for what you get. It costs a few more dollars to get the meal, but it’s worth it.
I think what makes this sandwich difficult to work with is that it’s not really receptive to sauce. I have tried several times over the years to put sauce on the sandwich in different ways, and I always end up losing half of it back into the box. Very disappointing.
The only good way to eat it with sauce is by dunking it, and that’s the least ideal way to have to eat a sandwich. This isn’t a slider. This is hardly a handheld sandwich due to its size. Maybe if there were more crispy folds for the sauce to stick to, things might be different. Who’s to say?
Final Thoughts
I think that this is the second-best sandwich on the fast-food market. It’s delicious, frankly. It has good sauce versatility (even though I personally recommend their titular sauce), and it’s different from what you normally see in terms of ingredients.
I think if they made it crispier and dropped the price back down, they would be toe-to-toe with a certain fried chicken sandwich from a competitor that I hope to review for you shortly.
In the meantime, Chick-fil-A is solidly in second place, and that’s an esteemed place to be.
